Biography

Tsutomu Terada was born in Osaka on May 4, 1974. He received B.Eng., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees from Osaka University in 1997, 1999, and 2003, respectively. In June 2000, he joined the Cybermedia Center of Osaka University as a Research Associate (Assistant Professor). Currently, an Associate Professor at Graduate School of Engineering, Kobe University. His research interests formerly lay in active database technologies, especially rule-based systems applying the event-driven programming techniques to various areas of applications. Now he is struggling to apply the rule-based technologies to wearable computing and ubiquitous computing. Also he is interested in entertainment computing such as mobile interactive music and games, broadcast databases, information filtering, and human interface. He is a member of IEEE, the Information Processing Society of Japan, the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan.

Rule-based Engine for Wearable Computing

His research group are developing a rule-based engine for wearable computing. The name of the system is A-WEAR (Active Wearable Engine Applying Rule-based principle).

In recent years, the downsizing of portable computers attracts a lot of attention on wearable computing. In wearable computing environments, a user brings and uses his/her own computer wherever he/she goes. As a result, wearable computers can provide various services which support daily life by utilizing a variety of devices such as a GPS and a magnetic sensor. However, most of conventional wearable computing systems are not flexible enough to change system functions according to the change of location and situations. Moreover, attached hardware devices on such systems are fixed. Therefore, we propose an extensible rule processing system for wearable computing environments. Since we employ the rule-based approach for describing system behaviors, we can customize the system functions flexibly and add/exchange devices attached on the system easily.

Rule-based I/O Control Device for Ubiquitous Computing

We propose a new framework of ubiquitous computing by rule-based event-driven I/O (input/output) control devices. Our approach achieves the flexibility and the autonomy because it employs a behavior description language that is based on ECA (Event, Condition, Action) rules with simple I/O control functions. We have implemented the prototype of ubiquitous device, connectors, and several sensors to show the effectiveness of our approach.
